About Me: the Making of an Environmental Artist

My Background

My Background

Growing up on the prairie has given me a close tie with the land. I crave being outdoors, connecting with our natural world, while capturing it on canvas. After researching environmental issues, my desire to use art as a tool to help bring awareness of them has only increased.

My Background

I work in many media and recently began adding recycled plastic pellets and flakes to my acrylic paintings for a 3-D effect. I also love working in oils, as the extended drying time allows me to blend their rich and vibrant colors for sky and water paintings. My love for experimenting has taken me beyond the ordinary with my art.

In order to leave a legacy for future generations, I want to preserve the beauty around me and show what an amazing, fragile world we have.  Many of my recent paintings are inspired by beautiful forest and waterways, but my portfolio also includes celestial skies and vibrant gardens. My style has been influenced by artists such as Georgia O'Keefe, Andrew Wyeth,  and Vincent Van Gogh.

Flow: My Backyard to the Ocean

Maryland has beautiful parks, with waterways flowing behind many backyards that lead into the Potomac River and ultimately to the Chesapeake Bay and on out to the ocean. Since the pandemic began, I have spent a lot of time exploring these parks. They are magical places. While there, I began thinking about environmental issues closer to home. Since Maryland is a filtering system for the Chesapeake, what we put on our yards and what we leave behind as litter, all flow down into the bay. So, I decided to create a series of paintings that lead from my backyard to the ocean. When the weather permits, you will find me painting along local rivers and streams, with my dog as my faithful companion, or my son Matt who likes to go off exploring. It has been fun to meet many interesting people while out painting in our parks. If you see me, please stop and say "hi"!
